Daily Devotional Luke 13:14-17 – Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 293

Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.” The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her? When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. (Luke 13:15-17)

I always gave my employers more than the required productivity. On days I fell short, I apologized. But sometimes patients required extra care. I had one boss who chewed me out the three or four times I didn’t meet productivity in a 3-month period even though I averaged above. He was an indignant human being, and I quit without notice within my probation period. Of course, the Director of Rehab where I applied knew him. He was desperate for a physical therapist but would only hire me prn (as needed, no benefits). Soon afterward my ex-boss took a new job and was fired two weeks later when he insulted a speech pathologist. It wasn’t very Christian-like, but I secretly clapped for my ex-boss to know humiliation. As a bonus, I was hired full time.

Jesus tells us the woman who couldn’t stand straight was crippled by Satan. We’ve already discovered God is not involved with murder or accidents. Jesus adds disease to that list.

The synagogue leader was also infected with an evil spirit. He cared more about a donkey than the dear woman who couldn’t stand straight. It’s hard to imagine indignancy so deep to tell a crippled woman to come on a different day for healing. Praising God and healing are the main purposes of going to church or temple. It’s rewarding when arrogant people are humiliated. As a bonus, Jesus did wonderful things. We can expect Jesus to heal any time, perhaps more often on the Sabbath. He always sets us free.

Father God, help me not be petty and give matters of judgment to you. Thank you for setting me free anytime I repent or cast my cares on you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. I think that we have all thought a time or two, this is not Christian, but I am so glad that this happened to ______ because _____. Some people call it Karma, some people call it just desserts etc. I have a problem with people who are so arrogant that they do not feel they need to be responsible for their actions. It does matter how you treat people and if you are humble, caring person you know that. Your, arrogant, ex-boss didn’t care about anyone but himself and that is not Christian behavior. Maybe, just maybe, because he lost his job, he realized that he was not being a good person and it changed him. We can hope that was the outcome.

    1. Today I was sitting on a bench at the car wash and got up for a second to see if my car was finished. A man without a mask approached me, and I told him not to come near me without a mask. He got really indignant and refused to move and pointed. No, you go over there. He said the coronavirus is a hoax and only 175,000 people have died from it. More people die of cancer every day. I an sick and tired of masks and people telling me what to do. I have to admit I was thinking, karma.

  2. This whole mask thing is making a lot of people crazy. I am not a fan either but I wear one to protect myself and my family. Yesterday, Victoria was in a car accident. When Drew and I got there the police were arriving too. I never thought about it until later but no one had a mask on. Not any one. You would have thought 3 police officers would have had one on. I think a lot of people think that it is no big deal. Death rates are being falsified and many Dr. have different opinions about how severe it is.

    1. Thanks for telling me online. I assume she’s okay. I am surprised police weren’t wearing a mask. My next door neighbor is an MD whose undergrad major was epidemiology. He told me genetic code as well as underlying disease affects how COVID will affect people. That is why some children die but most don’t. He also told me that since hospitals are being paid for every coronavirus death. If it’s a choice between coronavirus and another disease and the patient has both, they will choose coronavirus as the cause of death, and coronavirus caused the death to be earlier than the other disease would have taken them. So is that really falsifying? Coronavirus is spreading to more people because a lot of people think it’s no big deal. I am so glad you are being careful!

  3. Thank you for any other magnificent post.
Where else may anyone get that type of info in such an ideal means of
writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I am at the search for such info.

    1. Troy, I don’t know where you can get more information other than googling. Thank you so much for your encouragement and coming to my website. I hope you will return so that we can become family! I prayed for you today and hope you know how wide and long and high and deep God’s love for you is. Blessings, Jody
