Daily Devotional – Luke 12:49-53 – Why did Jesus say, I did not come to bring peace, but division? What are the roles of the trinity? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 287

I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. (Luke 12:49-53)

Dee Brookshire, an English writer for Advancing Native Missions, tells the story of E, a Muslim woman, who turned to Jesus. E was slapped by her parents and spat upon by her father and locked in her room for three years until her father found someone who would marry her. She was one of the fortunate converts who wasn’t slaughtered or burnt with acid. Being a Christian in the Middle East causes great division. Jesus told us, “Peace I bring to you.” Peace was His purpose. Unfortunately, there has never been true freedom of religion in the middle east. Changing religions has always caused division.

Jesus had the knowledge He would be crucified. Only a convicted killer sentenced to the electric chair could even fathom the anxiety and constraint that would bring. So, of course, Jesus wished the fire were already kindled. He wanted to put the torture behind him. Our baptism is a ritual that symbolizes what Jesus did for us on the cross. After we repent, He washes away our sin. His baptism was the real deal. He allowed himself to be tortured on the cross, so our sin would be buried with Him. When He rose, our sins were released with Him, gone with the wind, a symbol for the Holy Spirit. Another symbol for the Holy Spirit is fire. Jesus came to bring us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is peace. She comforts us.

Dearest God, The Three-in-one: Father God, thank you for Your great plan of love, forgiveness and grace that allows me to be righteous. Jesus, thank you for loving me. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Holy Spirit thank you for Your guidance, power, love, and comfort that give me peace. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

    1. I think it’s so amazing that God created an intimate relationship for himself, so he could fully understand relationships. In addition, God fully understands us because through Jesus He is part human. And we can fully communicate with Him because His Spirit connects with our spirits. The trinity fascinates me. If you have any thoughts, I’d love to hear them.

  1. This Bible verse seems so confrontational and angry. I liked the way you explained it. Your explanation makes so much sense. However, I do not understand when you say, “The Holy Spirit is peace. She comforts us.” I do not understand, She comforts us??

    1. Yes, I meant she comforts us. Genesis 1:27: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Since women are made in God’s image, God and His spirit are just as much female as they are male. Since God is called Father and fully thought of as male, the Holy Spirit should be thought of as a female. Again, these are just my thoughts. Many would not agree with me and that’s perfectly all right. I wanted you to know I have a Biblical reason for feeling that way. What do you think?

  2. I have never thought of the Holy Spirit as being a female. I know people that think that God is a female. I do not believe that either. I have a hard time with change. I prefer thinking of the Trinity as all male. I prefer going to a traditional church service, with the traditional hymns. The hymns that I grew up with mom and dad singing, playing the piano and the trumpet. I do not like a band playing the new Christian music. That’s just me. Perhaps a bit old fashioned, but it is what I like and it is what comforts me when I go to church.

    1. I definitely understand how you feel. For the same reasons that music comforts me also. But I was not comforted when I visited the Methodist Church in Marianna and Sam and I were the youngest people in the church except for two children who went to church with their grandparents. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter, so if it comforts you to think He is male, that’s what you should think. After all you are older than I am, big sister. Haha!
