Daily Devotional Luke 12:47-48 – What does the Bible say about to whom much is given? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 286

“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” (Luke 12:47-48)

At the National Prayer Breakfast on February 2, 2012, President Obama was rousing support for taxing the Nation’s wealthiest. He stated, “I actually think that is going to make economic sense. But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’s teaching that ‘for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.’”

What is Jesus telling us? The servant will be beaten does not indicate who is doing the beating. Many assume the master beats the servant, but I can assure you the Holy Spirit doesn’t beat anyone. Another name for the Holy Spirit is Comforter. It’s the natural consequences of our wrongdoings and our consciences that beat us. So, of whom, will much more be asked and demanded? President Obama suggested it was those with a lot of money. Spiderman’s uncle suggested it was superpower. I’m siding with Uncle Ben. I think it’s those with the power of the Holy Spirit, those who know the master’s will, that much will be demanded and much more will be asked.

Many Christians know God’s will for them, but some are unsure. Some Christians don’t realize that God will give them the power of the Holy Spirit when they ask. When you inquire what God wants you to do for him, He will reveal His plan. It will involve something He has gifted you with. With your talents and God’s power much more can be done.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I am Your servant sent to earth to advance Your kingdom. Use my talents to help You. Show me what I’m to do. Speak to me and give me power through Your Holy Spirit. Let me do more for You. In Jesus’ precious and holy name I pray, amen.

  1. When reading Luke 12: 47-48 the first person that I thought of was Dolly Parton. She is a really big deal here in Eastern Tennessee. She is an extremely philanthropic person and gives so much back to the people of Eastern Tennessee. She was born and raised in Sevierville. Her family was very poor, dirt poor. She had a hard life. She has made a lot of money and has never forgotten, “from the one has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” It is her motto. Our household actually benefits from the gifts that Dolly Parton gives. Trey receives, monthly, two books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This is just one example of how Dolly gives back to her community. If we could all be like Dolly, our world would sure be a better place. All of us do not have the money Dolly has but we all have gifts the Lord has blessed us with, that we can give back to people.
