Daily Devotional Luke 12:35-38 – The Parable of the Watchful Servants (Part 1) – How to serve God — Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 282

Be dressed, ready for service, and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. (Luke 12:35-38)

One blessing of the coronavirus is that fewer children are hospitalized. As a result my son’s girlfriend, a pediatric nurse, is scheduled for a combo of both days and nights. When she’s used to sleeping during the day, she must change and sleep at night. When she’s dressed for working nights, the hospital often calls and says she’s not needed. She faces a lonely night at home. She never complains and is always ready, devoted, and happy to serve. Because she’s a faithful servant, her children serve her also. They throw joy right back at her.

She’s an example of the servant God wants us to be, ready for action day or night, whenever the Holy Spirit knocks. When Jesus left earth, he sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. The Holy Spirit is our master. When we’re ready, the Holy Spirit dresses to serve and attends to us, equipping us with spiritual gifts and pumping us with power.

We best serve God when we’re prepared. With the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit, we make a huge difference and glorify God.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I’m dressed, waiting, and ready to serve. Please call on me. Let me recline at Your table and receive the gifts and power of Your Holy Spirit. In Christ’s name I pray. Amen

  1. I did comment on this devotion, so I am not sure what happened. When you serve children you must be faithful. You must also be spiritual for the patience, empathy and kindness you need and pumped with power, as you said. Lexi, sounds like a very devoted person, who is a real asset to her profession. I, too, learned so much from my kids at school and my clients. It is a huge learning experience and there were many days that I felt I learned more from the kids than I could have ever taught them. There is a hole in my heart since retiring and I need God to point me in the right direction to fill the hole.

    1. The only children I served were my own. I also learned from the elderly. It’s a good thing because I’m right up there now. Haha. You help me out a lot with my blog, and I sure appreciate it. I am over half done with my self-editing on my novel and will also appreciate your help reading/editing it. You’re a wonderful sister.

    1. Thanks. I definitely will call on you. I am stuck on a rewrite of a chapter that was horrible. I took it to my writer’s group, and i have a lot of work to do on it. Fantasy can be hard to write. You not only have to picture yourself in the scene. Your mind has to be there. My edit is taking longer than I thought. I am about halfway through.
