Daily Devotional Luke 12:27-28 – Be a Wildflower for God – The Spiritual meaning of Wildflowers (Lilies) – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 279

Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you – you of little faith! (Luke 12:27-28)

I attended church with a volunteer who practically lived there. She told the maintenance crew what needed fixing and cleaning and ran the Sunday School programs, Bible Studies, and Vacation Bible School. She was well-intentioned and organized, constantly straightening and scrubbing, doing the work of three or four people. She was a one-woman show, in charge, but glad to help. She didn’t want anyone in her way. When everything was perfect, she spun her wheels to think of something else to make the church more perfect. She probably took care of her home in the same manner.

In contrast, consider the wildflowers. They’re low maintenance and don’t labor or spin their wheels. Unlike work, labor is exhausting and burdensome. God’s work is easier because He gives us spiritual gifts and the power of the Holy Spirit to lighten our load. God doesn’t want us to spin our wheels looking for extra, unimportant drudgery. Wildflowers are not subjected to human rules and expectations. When humans get involved, it’s usually to mow them down.

Wildflowers are so beautiful on their own that Jesus compares them to the splendor of Solomon. But picture a field of wildflowers. They are more glorious when they grow freely with others.

God wants us to live freely, lovingly and joyfully. Jesus removed the burden of laws and sin. He created wildflowers for our enjoyment. Their beauty clothes fields, but God clothes people with greater riches. When we become like wildflowers; removing our chains, depending on God, becoming low maintenance, and growing in a community of love, our beauty grows

Father God, help me live freely. Take my burdens, remind me I’m forgiven, and show me where I labor unnecessarily. When I’m not anxious, I hear your voice, am more loving, and my beauty grows. Thank you for clothing me in riches. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. We are surrounded by fields that are filled with wildflowers. We go to the fields and cut the flowers and bring them into the house to enjoy. I love sitting on the front or back porch watching them swaying in the breeze. I am a type A, so anything that slows me down is a good thing.
