Daily Devotional Luke 12:1-3 – What does the Bible say about keeping secrets and sweeping things under the rug? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in Easy English – Day 270

So many thousands of people had gathered that they were stepping on each other. Jesus spoke first to his followers, saying, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, because they are hypocrites. Everything that is hidden will be shown, and everything that is secret will be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an inner room will be shouted from the housetops.” (Luke 12:1-3)

Wrongdoings of an extended family member ripped apart my family. Most of the family chose to sweep it under the rug. With God’s help and love my family relationships were restored except those of the wrongdoer, his wife, and their family. I want to actively love them, especially his wife, children, and grandchildren, but they refuse to talk about it and the wrongdoer refuses to repent. I want love restored.

The lessons we’ll learn over the next couple of days are important. Jesus gathered thousands of people to hear them. The Pharisees’ arrogance and hate rose up like yeast bread within the synagogue. The Pharisees had much hidden in their closets. Jesus tells them and us that what we’ve kept hidden will be shouted from the housetops.

God wants us to live joyfully, so we shouldn’t worry about past wrongs we’ve repented to God for. Sometimes we don’t have a way of connecting with people we’ve hurt. Sometimes we’ve done something, if told, would hurt a loved one beyond repair. In that case we should repent to God and trust Him.  All I know for sure is to know Jesus is to know God is to know love. The answer lies in God’s love. In the end, there is no end. Through God’s love we will understand the hearts of others and they will understand ours. God’s love will heal all wounds.

No doubt I’ve hurt people without realizing it. If I have, God will let the whole world know. But the world will understand then because God’s love will come to light and we’ll understand each of us has hurt others. In God’s perfect love, we’ll forgive and be forgiven.

Dearest Heavenly Father, thank you for your love, grace, and mercy that in the end will bring all things to light and enable me to love, forgive, and be forgiven. Help me forgive myself, so I can live in the freedom that Jesus died for. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. I love this scripture. It is straight forward. We know what is going to happen. I do believe that God will shout the wrongdoing from the roof tops for all to hear and have knowledge. We ask for forgiveness for our wrongdoings and we are forgiven. I think it is harder to forgive myself but that is what we are supposed to do. The wrongdoer has asked for forgiveness, just not in the way we wanted or expected. I am also curious if he has asked God for forgiveness. If he did, I wonder what kind of an apology God heard. If the circumstances were reversed we know how we would ask to be forgiven. The wrongdoer is not capable of this kind of apology. Do I agree with how he handled his sin…absolutely not. For many reasons, I accepted the little bit of an apology I did get. I know I won’t get more of an apology than I have already gotten. I, too, wanted love restored.

    1. The wrongdoer never apologized for what he did. He only apologized for a lie and never apologized to my daughter. I have chosen to forgive.
