Devotional Luke 11:37-38 – Online Bible Study, Bible Commentary in easy English – Love one another – Day 261

When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. (Luke 11:37-38)

Do you put both socks on before you put your shoes on or do you completely dress one foot before the other? My son asked this question of our family last week because his girlfriend does the latter. Since he’s an engineer he finds it more efficient to do all of one task before starting another. He was joking, of course, on our family chat.

The Pharisees never joke. Well, maybe they laugh with other Pharisees as they make fun of non-Pharisees. This Pharisee invited Jesus to dinner only to gather more material for roasting him. So, Jesus had no intention of eating. He sat down at the table with a planned response when the Pharisee pointed out his hands weren’t clean.

We recently spoke about mercy, and Jesus showed no mercy to the Pharisees. He wanted to emphasize to them and us that people who judge others, pointing out their faults, aren’t showing God’s love and keep others from knowing God. So, if someone you know is homosexual, sharing a bed with another who isn’t a spouse, gossips, covets, etc., God wants you to love them. He doesn’t want you to point out their faults. Will Jesus ultimately show mercy to the Pharisees? I believe He will. Romans 11:25-26 tells us that all Israel will be saved.

Father God, thank you for sending Jesus to save me. I want others to know Jesus’ love and mercy, so help me not point out their faults and keep my mouth shut. Keep me from being a Pharisee. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. It is so easy to judge someone else. This is something I need to work on and I do ask for help. I am making progress because now I remind myself to stop.

    1. It is easier for me to judge others than to remember I don’t know their hearts and can’t be in their shoes. I need to be better about not judging and showing more mercy. I pray I’m getting better. It’s definitely an area where I need improvement.
