Devotional Luke 11:33-36 – Online Bible Study, Bible commentary in easy English – When God is your lampstand, you can be full of light – Day 260

“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” (Luke 11:33-36)

We think of the eyes receiving light, not emitting it. But our eyes tell on us, they show our emotions. When we’re happy, our eyes smile; they open a little wider. When we’re depressed, our eyes squint in pain or even close. In this way, our eyes are lamps of our souls.

As Christians, we get light from God. He’s the lampstand we stand on. James 1:2-3 says: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” He also tells us that perseverance brings: 1) faith, 2) maturity, 3) completeness, 4) blessings, and best of all, 5) the crown of life. Christians can be happy during hardships because we pray, giving our cares to God and having faith he will help us solve our problems. When we’re sick, we can take medicine and call on other Christians to anoint us. And when it’s our time to die, we know we’ll be in paradise with God.

Father God, be my lampstand. Support me with your love and help me persevere through this trial. Thank you for letting me cast my cares on you, so I ‘m not left in darkness. Give me Your Holy Spirit and send me others who will increase my faith. With You as my lampstand I can smile, and my eyes radiate Your light, love, and joy. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. It is hard for me to believe that there is a person who has not gone through trials and hardships during the course of their life. It’s part of life. Thankfully, most people have more joy in their lives than hardship. When we do experience hardship, Our Father is here to help us through the burdens in life. He is the one who strengthens us and gets us through hard times. He is the one who gives us hope. I am thankful.
