Devotional Luke 11:29-30 – Online Bible Study, Bible commentary in easy English – Proof that God exists – Day 258

As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.” (Luke 11:29-30)

God told Jonah: “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” (Jonah 1:2) If God made the same request of you, he might say go to Iraq and preach the Gospel to ISIS. You might do as Jonah did: sail in the opposite direction. Because Jonah didn’t obey, God sent a storm that threatened to sink the boat Jonah was on. So, Jonah told the other men to throw him into the sea so God would stop the storm. Reluctantly, they did. Then, of course, Jonah spent three days and nights in the belly of a whale until he promised God he would go to Nineveh and give them God’s message. Then, the whale spit Jonah onto dry land. Jonah went to Nineveh and probably stood in an inconspicuous place near a couple of old women and spoke in a soft voice, announcing, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” Jonah didn’t say the message was from God nor did he give them any hope they could stop their doom. The Bible doesn’t say the Ninevites believed Jonah. It says the Ninevites believed God. Therefore, God enhanced Jonah’s lame statement and enabled the message to spread to the king. Every Ninevite fasted, put on sackcloth and repented. God used Jonah’s weakness to show He is strong. He used Jonah as a sign He exists.

On a greater scale, Jesus was a sign of God’s existence. Jesus turned water into wine, healed the sick, and drove out demons. He even raised dead men to life. We keep wanting more proof that God exists – If only you will heal my family member, if only you get me a better job, if only you will … then I will believe. God says, “Enough is enough, the only sign you need is Jesus.”

Heavenly Father, thank you so much for sending Jesus. While studying Him, I am grateful for getting to know You. Thank you for the Book of Jonah. It shows you give power to the weak to do the supernatural. Lord, please use me to strengthen the faith of others. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. The story of Jonah seems more like a Tall Tale to me. Being swallowed by a whale and kept in it’s belly for 3 days and then spit out on land. Today, since Jesus is not here on Earth performing miracles, belief is a matter of faith. How do we reconcile something that seems unbelievable to us when it is the Word from the Bible?

    1. 1 Corinthians 13 tells us: “Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.” I think that means we’re not going to understand everything now. We’re not supposed to. It is one of those things we can ask Jesus face to face. Maybe it’s a tale, and maybe it’s not. With God, all things are possible. Right?

  2. We know that there are many things that we will not understand until we are face to face with Jesus in Heaven. However, being in the belly of a whale for three days and not being digested seems far fetched to me. You are right though, all things are possible with God.
