Devotional Luke 11:23-26, Commentary, Bible Study, blog – Whoever does not gather with me scatters – Day 256

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.” (Luke 11:23-26)

When he was in college, Mike Pence attended a Christian group on campus and decided he wanted to wear a cross like his fraternity brother. That friend told Mike he should wear Christ in his heart first. That comment hit him hard. A few weeks later he realized what happened on the cross happened for him, and he trusted Jesus to be his Savior. He found out the importance of gathering for Christ but has been criticized for his statement that he won’t have dinner alone with a woman other than his wife.

All Christians are tempted and many fall. Simon Peter tells us, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” God forgives us when we fall, but he hates that we go through the misery. That’s why Jesus tells us to gather with him and pray for the Holy Spirit daily. Knowing that we’ve fallen once, the spirit of lust will return. If our house is swept clean and the Holy Spirit isn’t present, then the spirit of lust will leave and gather the spirits of hate, depression, anxiety, pride, fear, revenge, and addiction and return to us. Our final condition will be worse.

Dearest Father, Lead me away from temptation. Give me Your Holy Spirit, Your power and wisdom. Keep the enemy out of my house. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

  1. Whoever is not with me is against me. That is where my comfort level stops with this scripture. The thought of an evil spirit bringing other evil spirits into the house makes me really uncomfortable. Maybe it is because, at one point, I felt there was evil in my house. I believe my house is peaceful now and evil is not welcome here.

    1. Just keep praying that and you will be great. It is when we stop praying that the many tries to get his mitts on us.
