Devotional Luke 10:40b-42 – Bible Study, Commentary, Martha and Mary – Do we cast our cares on Jesus? – Day 247

She (Martha) came to him (Jesus) and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:40b-42)

Last night my Bible Study studied the Scripture 1 Peter 5:6-7 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” The question was asked: “Is casting your cares on God an action of humbleness?” People who are proud want to maintain control of everything. They can’t place their anxieties at Jesus’ feet. They may pray about their problems, but they continue to worry. They don’t trust God. They only trust themselves.

Jesus pleads, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. Only one thing is needed. Be humble, sit at my feet and trust me. Cast your cares on me.”

Heavenly Father, let me humble myself under your mighty hand and choose what is better. In the name of Jesus, I won’t worry about what others are doing or not doing. Lord, I sit at your feet. I give you my worries, and I trust you to take them and guide me. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.

  1. I have this feeling that when you wrote this, that you were thinking, “This is a good one for Pam.” I agree! I have this problem of thinking that I can take care of it. I can do it by myself. Pride! I wasn’t even aware of this until the last year and a half, when you pointed out to me that if I was worrying, I wasn’t trusting God. I have worked on this and I feel that I am doing better. I now pray about my pride and control issues. I give my worries to God and I am trying to trust that he will take care of things for me.

    1. You are worrying a lot less. I’m very proud of you. You most likely have control issues because something bad happened to you when you were young and unable to control the situation.
