Bible Study Devotional – Day 242 – Commentary Luke 10:23-24 – The privilege of discipleship

Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” (Luke 10:23-24)

I’ve learned much about discipleship studying Luke. It looks different for every person because we have various gifts and different callings. Some have been given many sheep to care for and others only one. Discipleship can change as our lives alter. Now that I’m retired from physical therapy, I have less opportunity to help people physically, but more time to write about God’s kingdom. I spend most of my day writing about God on this blog and in my novel, Denial of the Enemy, and I love doing it.  Following Jesus is a privilege and a joy.

Jesus’ apostles, a subset of disciples, were particularly privileged and blessed. They began as students, like little children, but after three years with Him, they became close friends. Each apostle has a throne in heaven. Wouldn’t it have been wonderful to be an apostle? To have actually been in the presence of Jesus on earth was an incredible privilege. But, I think about the verse Luke 12:48b: From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded. The apostles lives were not their own. They were jailed and tortured and all but John died young. Could I have withstood all they went through? Maybe not.

As Jesus’ disciples, we see and hear things that others miss. We see the miracle in every sunrise and sunset, we hear the Holy Spirit whisper in our ears, sometimes nudging us. We experience love, peace, hope, and joy more deeply than others. Our spirits will spend eternity with God in a place of love where no tears are shed.

Father God, thank you for discipleship privilege, the honor of being the hands and voice of Jesus. Help me be a blessing to the sheep you give me. Help me see and take part in your miracles, and help me hear your voice calling me to do your work. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. I am one of your sheep. I am learning so much from you. It is a privilege to be able to read your devotion everyday and learn more about Christ and the Bible. You are doing good work, Jody. It has great purpose. You jumped right into your retired world knowing exactly what you wanted to do. I, on the other hand, am struggling a bit with my purpose. I feel like I need to give back but I am just not sure how God wants me to do that yet. Meanwhile, I have a list an arm length long of things that need to be accomplished around this house. The list is becoming shorter and I am grateful because I have done a lot of back breaking work around here. What will I do when the list is done…make a new list? How about traveling with my husband, enjoying the boat, lake and pool. Meanwhile, I will continue to pray for purpose in serving God.

    1. You are showing much love to your daughter, son-in-law, husband, and grandchild. They are the sheep God has given you to make His love known. You do a great job of that. I am also your sheep. You give me great encouragement to continue this ministry. Perhaps God will give you more sheep in the future, but your purpose is great now! I love you!
