Bible Study Devotional – Day 230 – Commentary Luke 9:54-56 – Can we show love and grace when we’re angry?

When the disciples James and John saw this (the Samaritans not welcoming Jesus), they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then he and his disciples went to another village.

Philip Yancey’s book, What’s so Amazing about Grace, tells about the hateful, hurtful letters he received from Christians who disagree with him about unimportant things. We all believe Christ was crucified and ascended into heaven. Christians shouldn’t reject other Christians over religious matters.

God never wants us to respond with hate or revenge. Hate and revenge are Satan’s demons. James and John, whom Jesus nicknamed Sons of Thunder, were rightly angry the Samaritans rejected their friend, Jesus. But their response provided a teaching moment. Can’t you picture Jesus shaking his head, saying “It is only the thief that comes to destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly?”

Father God, when I feel anger, help me not respond in rage. Remove every ounce of hate in me. Help me represent you by acting in love and showing grace. In Christ’s name I pray. Amen.

  1. I feel like most people need to work on this. I know I do. I try and take deep breaths, I try counting to 10 or 20. I try walking away to think, I try everything I can think of, to not explode. I always think that someone is more believable when they are calm and not angry. So, it makes sense to stay calm, so what you have to say is listened to. I pray for anger to removed from me and grace.

    1. If you can walk away even for a minute or count to 1- or 20 or think to take deep breaths, then you are improving. I remember the times that anger welled up in me so fast, I would just fly off the handle before I could think. I am still not perfect and never will be, but as I said before it took three years to get where I am now, and I thank God for helping me.
