Daily Devotional Luke 9:51-53 – What are the consequences of fear? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 229

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. (Luke 9:51-53)

Excited and determined to learn, I went to my first Florida Christian Writer’s Conference. I learned how little I knew about writing so was reluctant to go to awards night even though I had a submission. I’m shy, so it’s huge for me to enter a room with hundreds of people. Some people I met at the conference went home early and others had no room for me at their tables. Because I felt alone without anything to offer, I left early.

This is the first time Luke gives us an indication that Jesus’ popularity nosedived. John 6 says many disciples left him. John 7 says the rulers of Judea (Jerusalem is in Judea) looked for ways to kill him, so the Samaritans were afraid to welcome Jesus. Jesus wanted to meet the Samaritans and offer His love in person. But because they were afraid, the Samaritans missed out on meeting Jesus. Because I was afraid, I missed receiving my submission’s award at the writer’s conference. How often do we miss out on opportunities God has arranged for us because we’re afraid?

Father God, the Spirit of timidity and fear come from the enemy. Please cloak me with Your Spirit of power, love, and self-discipline. Then I can receive all the blessings you’ve intended for me. I pray in Jesus’ name, amen.

  1. I guess I have a hard time thinking that being shy or fearful at times comes from the enemy. Usually I am pretty outgoing, but walking into a room of strangers is intimidating to me too. I don’t like the feeling of knowing no ones name. I feel uncomfortable talking to strangers at first. Some people make you feel more welcome than others and are willing to talk. I am always hoping that someone like that sees me sitting alone at a table and is willing to talk. I usually say a prayer for confidence, but sometimes I am overwhelmed and need to leave. Do most people feel this way and miss opportunities?

    1. I shouldn’t have felt timid and shy at a Christian conference, but I did. I will know more of the attendees next time, so I will be sure to look for people who don’t know anyone. I obviously missed out, but I want to make sure no one else does. I like your idea of sitting at a table alone and praying for someone to sit with you. I waited too long and all the tables were filled. I am pretty sure the enemy was telling me that no one would like me, and I listened.
