Bible Study Devotional – Day 224 – Commentary Luke 9:37-40 – When people come to us with scientific questions or healing needs, do we lead them to Jesus?

The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.” (Luke 9:37-40)

Last month, at a Zoom Christian writer’s meeting, my submission stated humans were created millions of years ago. My writer friends, usually open minded, jumped on me for having an evolutionary, not biblical, view of creation. Wikipedia states early man existed 2.5 million years ago. That was when mankind began making basic tools. The Bible isn’t a science book; it’s a history book that meets our spiritual needs. I think it’s a stretch to count through the generations of Israelites in the Bible to calculate when man was created. Two reasons people reject Christianity are asking people to surrender their scientific beliefs and not giving love and spiritual healing to people who seek it.

Jesus  promised the apostles could perform physical and spiritual healing when He sent them out on their own. So, the man in the crowd went to the disciples begging them to heal his son. The disciples let him down in two ways. They didn’t heal his son, and they didn’t guide him to Jesus. I’m sure the crowd watched and  the incident caused some to not follow Jesus. Luckily, the man was desperate and still found Him. Christians may not all have the gift of physical healing, but we all have God’s power to love and serve others.

Father God, remind me to think before I open my mouth. I’m your representative, and what I say and do affects the way people feel about You. Help me to use the power of love and service You’ve given me to guide others to you before they’re desperate. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. I, too, believe in evolution. There is scientific proof and that makes it fact. How do people believe in creation when we definitely know we evolved? So that makes me ask, why the Bible talks of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. If Adam and Eve existed and they were the first humans that God created then they had not yet evolved. Adam and Eve are always pictured as two beautiful people in the beautiful Garden of Eden, but that is human spin on the story. In my mind, they would have looked more ape like than human. Did Adam and Eve exist? Is the Bible telling a fictional story? We have had this discussion at our house numerous times. How do we reconcile fact, with what the Bible tells us? There are people that believe that every word of the Bible is factual. I don’t see how that can possibly be true. Who wrote this part of the Bible? If we asked Jesus all these questions, how would He answer?

    1. . I definitely believe in creation. I believe it was God who initiated the Big Bang and everything that happened perfectly from it. I believe God created Adam and Eve I’m not sure I’d say they look more like apes than humans, but their brains definitely weren’t as big and they looked more like cavemen. The Bible is a history book and most of the stories are true, but I guess I question Jonah, Noah’s ark, and Job. But if they were made up, I believe God wanted the stories in the Bible. Moses supposedly wrote Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus

  2. I guess that I think about this subject a little different than most people. Could be a good discussion when you are here! I don’t understand why God can’t be part of evolution in the scientific world. I do believe in the Big Bang theory and I believe God made it all happen. I believe in evolution but believe God was part of that. If you Google what man looks like 2.5 million years ago, man looked more like an ape. I believe that God created ape like man.

    1. I also believe in evolution that God had his hand in. I just don’t believe mankind evolved from apes. I believe that God created Adam and Eve as people, not apes. Yes, you are right, the shape of their heads at that point was more like an ape than current people. So, of course, through God, mankind has evolved to what we look like now. There has to be evolution since plants evolved from a single cell, but I believe God was in that process also. God is in everything.
