Bible Study Devotional – Day 215 – Commentary Luke 9:21-22 – Why was Jesus’ identity a secret?

Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this (that He’s the Messiah) to anyone. And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” (Luke 9:21-22)

When my daughter started eighth grade, she was unhappy and needed a change, so we decided to place her in a private school that one of her friends, the same age, attended. Two months later the report card she brought home had ninth grade written on it. I told the owner she made a mistake. She revealed her school didn’t have an eighth grade; I had placed my daughter in a High School. I felt foolish and knew my mistake would drastically affect my daughter’s life. I wanted to keep it a secret, but I had to tell those closest to me.

Jesus had to tell those closest to him, the Twelve, He was the Messiah. He trusted them. And when His life was threatened, the apostles’ lives would also be in danger. Jesus had two good reasons for not wanting to reveal to others He was the Messiah. First, if He claimed to be the Son of God, He might be killed immediately. Secondly, no one understood the significance of being the Messiah. The Jews expected the Messiah would free them from the oppression of the Roman government, not from their sins. No one could have begun to understand who He was until He was raised to life on the third day.

Lord, thank you for sending Your Son to be my Savior. Help me to wrap my head around that significance. Not only have my wrongdoings and foolishness been wiped clean, You have given me the power of Your Holy Spirit to perform miracles to do Your work. In addition, you have adopted me as Your child. I am an important part of the Royal Family. I am worthy. When I am called, the angels will take me to heaven to be with You and my loved ones for eternity. Thank you Dear Father. I love you. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. There was no way that anyone could understand the significance of who Jesus was, until he rose from the dead. I, too, am thankful for the precious gift of my sins being forgiven and the hope of Heaven. Help me to understand that I am worthy of your gifts.

    1. None of us are worthy of God’s gifts and miracles yet he chose fishermen of low social standing to be his best friends. It is God who makes us worthy by taking away our wrongdoings. We are righteous in His eyes because He gave us that gift. I see Peter in you. Peter always said what was on his mind and was one of His three best friends.

    1. Yanira, thanks for coming to my website and for your encouragement. I prayed for you and your family. Blessings, Jody
