Bible Study Devotional – Day 212 – Luke 9:12-13 – Can Christians perform miracles?

Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here. He replied, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish – unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” (Luke 9:12-13)

The website www.belief.net tells us how to pray for a miracle. 1) we need to repent and ask God’s forgiveness so God sees us as righteous. John 9:30 tells us: “We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.”  2) We need to pray. James 4:2 tells us: “You do not have because you do not ask.” 3) Ask only for miracles within God’s will. The Lord’s prayer states, “Thy will be done.” 4) Have faith. Luke 8:48 states, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

The Twelve just returned from a journey where they performed miracles. They know that Jesus has power (from God) and has the authority to give them the power. When they went on this mission, they took nothing with them. God blessed their journey and made sure they had everything they needed including food. He gave them the power to perform miracles. How quickly the apostles forgot they have God’s power. They also forgot how big their God is. If they knew who Jesus was, they would have answered, “Thank you for blessing us with five loaves of bread, two fish and God’s power. We will feed the crowd.”

Father God, When I pray, I hear you telling me something you want me to do. Up until now I have ignored your request because having the resources would require a miracle. Lord, I have sinned, and I’m asking you to forgive me and to grant me the miracle so I can carry out your will. Lord, I have faith in your word that says you will grant me this miracle. I pray in Jesus name, and go in peace. Amen.

  1. For me, it is hard to fathom what God is capable of doing for us. It is so huge that it is hard to wrap my brain around it. Would God give me a miracle? I feel unworthy. Yet, he did give me a miracle once. I know that he can perform miracles, yet I feel like a Doubting Thomas. I am not quite sure how to describe that, except to say I know that God can perform miracles, but will He perform a miracle? Jody, what does God want you to do? If you don’t want to say I understand. I like this devotion because it makes me think.

    1. God’s word makes us think. Just when we think we understand something in the Bible, another question is raised. As we talked about on the phone, you are worthy of a miracle. And as you said, God has given you one already. I feel like God wants me to start a private school and create a learning system like Montessori. But I am supposed to do it with someone. It’s a strange request since I’m not a teacher. The school is also to give scholarships to at risk children. It’s a request for the future bc God has not revealed who my partner in this would be, and I will definitely need a miracle for its funding.

    1. God keeps putting it in my head. I think it started when I was in the hospital after Rebecca’s birth.
