Bible Study Devotional – Day 190 – Commentary Luke 8:16-18 – What is the light of Jesus?

“No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. Therefore, consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.” (Luke 8:16-18)

It’s wonderful to hear from friends and family at Christmastime. We sometimes receive Seasons’ Greeting cards from those who put up Christmas trees, and though I love hearing from friends, I feel that message is hiding Jesus’ light under the bed.

Jesus wants His light to shine through us. So, we must read His word carefully and put it into practice. Jesus died to love us, not judge us. But in the end, He will shine his light on us, and everything we do on earth, except our repented wrongdoings, will be brought into the open. He loves us all, but those who enter heaven must put His word into practice for no tears to be shed. We will either receive more blessings or have everything taken away because without God’s love, we have nothing.

Father God, thank you for your grace and shaping me into the person I am. Help me understand Your word and let the light of Your love shine through me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. Before I read your devotional, I thought about what the light of Jesus means to me. I believe it is the love of Jesus in our life. I believe that we have no secrets and when we meet Jesus we will have to repent for our wrongdoings. If we repent we are forgiven.

    1. I think it is the love of Jesus also. However, when I read commentaries it meant different things to different people which is good. To me having the light be the love is Jesus was the only thing that made sense to me when I substituted the love of Jesus every time the scripture said light.
