Bible Study Devotional – Day 183 – Commentary Luke 7:33-35 – Do people see love in us?

“For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by all her children.” (Luke 7:33-35)

According to Andy Stanley, pastor and author, one of the five main reasons people leave churches are bad church experiences, “the result of somebody prioritizing a view over you.”

The wisdom of the laws of love Jesus taught, produces righteous (by God’s grace), loving children. The wisdom of “thou-shall-not” laws policed and enforced by  some “religious,” produce self-righteous children. If we choose the laws of love as John the Baptist and Jesus did, then it doesn’t matter if we eat and dress strangely and live in the wilderness like John or if we eat bread and drink wine and socialize with sinners like Jesus. Those following religious laws that don’t include love will no doubt be accusatory.

Heavenly Father, help me live by Jesus’ commandment to love. As you love me, help me care for those who have a view over you so they can see love in me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  1. I have read this 5 times and I am not sure how to comment because I am not sure I understand this. I agree that the laws of love that Jesus teaches would produce righteous, loving children because his love is perfect. How many of us can teach His laws of love as Jesus or John the Baptist would have? We are not perfect. So the wisdom of other laws of love would be what most of us could teach? Those laws would produce self righteous children? I agree that many people leave the church because of bad experiences. Do you mention those bad church experiences because people do not follow the laws of love that Jesus would teach? Do people see the love in you? Your love overflows, Jody!! I am really anxious to see your comments, because I feel like my brain is not functioning correctly on this Saturday morning!

    1. Thank you so much for commenting. I have critique groups that help me with my writing. However, I write so many of these, I don’t have time to get them all critiqued, so thank you so much for doing that for me with these devotionals. I changed it, so I hope it’s more understandable. It was me whose brain was not functioning on Friday morning when I wrote this. You could have read it 100 times and it would not have made sense. The other laws don’t include love because Christians are telling people if they don’t do such and such, they will go to hell. Yes, I did mention bad church experiences because people don’t follow the laws of love. Your love overflows, too. Thanks, Sis.

  2. I do not read your devotionals with the idea that I must critique them…LOL! I love spending this time with you and I love to learn what you teach. I do understand the rewritten devotional. I immediately thought of a very good friend who told me I would go to Hell because I wasn’t Catholic. I believe that happened when I was in 9th grade. It was the end of our friendship. I wish I would have told her that her church did not teach love or respect if that is what she thought. I was so shocked I don’t remember what I said, or if I said anything at all.

    1. I do appreciate your critique. People told me I was going to hell after I got a divorce, and two of my dearest Christian friends unfriended me (Facebook wasn’t invented). God may not have liked that I got a divorce, but He forgave me and loves me. I don’t blame my friends because of what they were taught, but I miss them. I look forward to seeing them in heaven where love is perfect.
