Bible Study Devotional – Day 182 – Commentary Luke 7:31-32 – Could Jesus compare us to complaining children?

Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’” (Luke 7:31-32)

In a nursing home where I worked, a man with a musculoskeletal disease often appeared on my evaluation list. I cringed when I saw his name. He complained incessantly and made up rules of what he would and wouldn’t do. He dictated his very limited treatment plan. I prayed before visiting this man, to avoid breaking his rules and be able to show him God’s love. How would I act if I were disabled and confined to a nursing home?

Is the coronavirus quarantine justification to complain? Perhaps it is if you live in New York City or have lost your job. But complaining is like worrying, it won’t help. My daughter lost her job as a marketing and sales manager for a Hilton. Now, she’s expanded her time teaching English to Chinese children over the internet, and she’s helping a family produce business change their customer base from restaurants to individuals.

Are you lonely? Video chats and zoom help. Invite a neighbor or two to your backyard and maintain social distancing. They won’t even want you to provide food and drink. Are you lacking exercise? Turn on music and dance. My son uses rocks and buckets and various lengths of poles. Are you afraid to go to the store? Wal-Mart has free pick-up. Are you stuck indoors with small children? How about a treasure or scavenger hunt? Ask your mom and dad what games they played outdoors as children. Have your children pick up the lint off the carpeting while you’re dusting. They’ll do it in anticipation of your playing outdoors with them. Because I couldn’t spread cheer to my family on Easter, I strung toilet paper together with colorful ribbons and hung them on my neighbors’ doorknobs.

Heavenly Father, instead of complaining like a child, give me the creativity of a child, so I can change this coronavirus outbreak from a burden to a blessing. Help me think of ways to help others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. I’ll be honest in saying that I have been complaining a lot about a particular situation. I know the complaining is starting to annoy Drew. As you said, complaining does not change a thing. It IS like worry, it won’t help. I am praying about the complaining and the person I am complaining about. I have asked for help to see the situation in a different perspective and help with changing my attitude. I try to look outside of the box on this problem and look for a different ways to deal with the frustrations. Yes, we are God’s complaining children. So if we complain we need to pray. Jody, this was a very good devotional for me this morning. Thanks for your good words!! I need to try and do better on this.
