John’s disciples told him about all these things (performing miracles). Calling two of them, he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Luke 7:18-20)
Have you ever felt so alone you questioned the existence of God? During elementary school I was so painfully shy, I couldn’t force myself to speak to my classmates, so they ignored me too. I felt alone, angry at God for making me shy. I questioned His existence.
John the Baptist was also a loner, choosing wilderness for home. A miracle child, born to older parents, an angel announced his birth. His father, though mute during John’s gestation, spoke prophesy after his birth. Curiosity about John and God’s blessing shot him to celebrity status when he exited the desert, baptizing and preaching to thousands.
Now John was in jail, feeling lonely, probably depressed, thinking his purpose was finished. John heard through his disciples that Jesus performed miracles. If Jesus was the Messiah, why didn’t Jesus perform a miracle to release him from jail? Because John had one more mission – letting us know we aren’t alone questioning God. Even the most faithful do. And John shows us what to do with our questions – take them directly to Jesus.
Lord, thank you for telling me I’m not alone when I question you. Give me courage to ask you directly. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
I remember how shy you were. You were the cutest little thing though! I think most, if not all people have been in circumstances that they felt abandoned by Jesus or by God…multiple times. When we moved to Tennessee everything went wrong, the movers, the builder, the house. It really was a nightmare. I felt like we shouldn’t be in Tennessee. I felt like we should leave. I prayed about it all the time but it never changed. I felt totally abandoned. I guess I didn’t really question his existence as much as I wondered why he wasn’t listening to me. I felt like my prayers were falling on deaf ears. Things are better than they were but I still question this house at times and if we are supposed to be here.
I know you felt abandoned during that process. All you can do is ask God why your house went down like it did when you were praying and that you would like to understand what happened. I think He will answer you at some point. You sold your house so easily up north. I think he would have prevented you from selling your house if you weren’t supposed to move. You have a gorgeous house with to die for views! I’m glad I was cute as a little girl because I wasn’t a lot of fun to be around. Not the life of the party!!!
