Bible Study Devotional – Day 159 – Commentary Luke 6:12-16 – Do you have a favorite place to pray?

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas, son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. (Luke 6:12-16)

Grantham Point Park with its lighthouse and Lake Dora was my favorite place to be with God when I lived in Mount Dora. We all feel God when we spend time in His creation. Some of us prefer lakes, woods, or gardens when we’re praying or thinking.

Jesus chose a mountainside to be close to God and discuss who his apostles would be. These were not only the men he would travel with, but they were the men commissioned to spread His Gospel, to shape history. The decision was so important, he spent the whole night with God, undoubtedly listening most of the time.

How often do we make important decisions after a few minutes of praying without listening to God? Perhaps we choose friends, employees, and employers without asking Him.

Lord, help me choose a place in Your creation to be our place. Remind me to go there when I need to be comforted and make decisions. Help me to listen for your advice after I pray. Amen.

  1. I do not have a favorite place to pray. I love to be outdoors at night. The stars are amazing as we have no light pollution. We follow Dark Night guidelines. For me, it is easy to pray as I look toward the heavens. I pray just as easily in my bedroom though and I love to pray in the kitchen too. Guess I am easy to please! Maybe I need to find that special place and make it our place.

    1. I don’t have a favorite place to pray in Marianna, but I think I’ll find one. I loved to go to that park in Mount Dora. God made me feel so loved while I was there. The stars in your neighborhood are beautiful. In fact your whole neighborhood is beautiful. Sitting on your front porch or back porch looking at the lake and mountains is perfect!
