Bible Study Devotional – Day 149 – Commentary Luke 5:20-23 – Is God’s Word relevant?

When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend your sins are forgiven.” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or say, “Get up and walk?” But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat, and go home.” (Luke 5:20-23)

For Christmas, my son’s girlfriend gave me a box of cards with promises from God. The verse I chose this morning was Deuteronomy 16:15: “The Lord your God will bless you in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.” I sent it to my daughter, who is wondering how she will get all her work done if she has a child, to encourage her. I hope it encourages you, too. There are many things written in the Bible that God wants us to know, so I’m glad you’re studying the Bible with me.

Whether they were to accept Him as the Messiah or not, Jesus wanted the Pharisees and the teachers of the law to know He has the authority on earth to forgive sins. Jesus calls himself the Son of Man because He wants us to know He is fully man and understands us. He also wants us to know He is fully God and has God’s power to forgive sin and heal our hearts. Each of us is different and needs to hear different things. Sometimes we need to hear, “Your sins are forgiven.” and other times we need to hear, “Get up and go! God will bless the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete.”

  1. How could we live without His word? His words teach us so much about mankind, how we should live, how we should pray, how we should treat others, even our enemies. His words give us peace and tranquility in turmoil and strength when we feel defeated or lost. His words take our burdens and make us feel lighter. We are blessed by his words and love.
