When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” (Luke 5:4-5)
God puts desires in our hearts that relate to works he wants us to accomplish. For me it’s writing a novel, writing a book with devotions that teaches the Bible, picture books that teach children how to read, and perhaps a new curriculum for elementary students. I’ve had times of discouragement when I say, “Master, I’m not a writer or a teacher, but because you say so, I will try.” God likes it when we tell him our feelings and when we’re willing to do his works.
Simon Peter is tired and discouraged. He and his brother, Andrew, have been fishing all night and haven’t caught anything, and they have almost finished cleaning the nets when Jesus tells Simon to let them down again. The Gospel of John tells us Simon Peter and Andrew had previously spent a day with Jesus, so Simon already has faith and has no problem telling Jesus, “because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
Luke paints a picture of Simon Peter. He is faithful, but always reveals what’s on his mind. Because he is a strong personality, he will be the leader of the twelve disciples. Although John will become Jesus’ closest friend, Simon Peter and John’s brother, James, are the three that spend the most time with Jesus. When Simon says, “we’ve worked hard all night,” he’s talking about himself and Andrew. We know Andrew is present because the Gospel of Matthew tells us Andrew was also in the boat with Simon. Perhaps Luke doesn’t mention Andrew because he’s letting us know Andrew is overshadowed by his brother’s strong personality.
Father, God, help us to discern the desires you have placed in our hearts. Let us always express our feelings in prayer and be willing to do the works you have given us. Amen.
I spent my whole working career helping children to learn and serving their needs. I also had two very special clients who I helped for many years. I felt my service to them should be to help them feel as much joy in their lives as possible. I always felt so proud of my kids at school when they learned educationally, emotionally, or physically. It was so much fun to be part of their enthusiasm in learning. Then there were the kids who were a huge challenge because of their emotional needs. It made for a difficult and exhausting day but I always felt urge to serve them, I guess, because God put the desire in my heart. I also had two very special clients who I helped for many years. I felt my service to them should be to help them feel as much joy in their lives as possible. Now I am retired and I feel God wants me to get through all the bad things that have happened. Now that we are starting to get settled, I again feel that God is putting the desire to serve others into my heart.
Knowing God will tell you, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matthew 25:21) makes us want to serve him and do more. You have done a spectacular job serving children and now you are doing a wonderful job serving your family.
