Bible Study Devotional -Day 141 – Commentary Luke 4:27-30 – Does God know your heart?

“And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed – only Naaman the Syrian.” All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. (Luke 4:27-30)

It’s wonderful having my sister, Pam. We have shared experiences, and much of the time we know each other’s hearts. As a result, we can talk about matters of the heart without fear. We aren’t judgmental of one another. God and Jesus know our hearts. They understand our hurts and why we do things even when our actions aren’t honorable. They know how the enemy has attacked us. We should always talk to them about fear, anxiousness, and guilt. Jesus died so we could live life, free of negativity, to its fullest with joy. Jesus is perfect at reading hearts; outsiders not so much.

When Jesus began his sermon, the Nazarenes loved Him. He spoke about freedom, vision, and good news. They expected Jesus to perform miracles as he did in other towns. Then, they brought Jesus down to their level. They didn’t believe he could be the Messiah because He was a Nazarene, one of them. Jesus could see their hearts. They were without faith in Him. Jesus ended his sermon with an Old Testament story, this one about another Gentile, Naaman, from Syria, who was a Gentile, even a general of an opposing army. He used the story to warn the Nazarenes that God only performs miracles on people with faith (even as small as a mustard seed). Jesus called them out, and now they made it clear that Jesus read their hearts correctly. The Nazarenes were ready to kill Jesus. That was not God’s plan at the time, so with God’s power, he was able to walk through the crowd.

God, we’re guilty. But you sent your Son to take away our sins and guilt. Help us to understand that you forgive us and want us to forgive ourselves. Because if we don’t, Jesus died for nothing.

  1. In your closing prayer your words really caught my attention. I never really thought of it the way you expressed it. God forgives our sins and he wants us to forgive ourselves, otherwise Jesus died for nothing. That is a lot to think about. You do know my heart, Jody. You know that I feel guilt for things that happened in the past and it is hard to forgive myself. I certainly can not go back and change anything, so I can only move forward with God’s grace.

Heavenly Father, please forgive my sins and my mistakes and help me get to a place that I can forgive myself.

    1. Thanks for your comments. I read that a long time ago and it definitely helped me to forgive myself. I prayed your prayer for you. It is so important to forgive yourself. You don’t have to get to a certain place — just forgive yourself!!!
