Bible Study Devotional – Day 135 – Commentary Luke 4:5-8 – Can we serve both God and the devil?

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

In my novel, Denial of the Enemy, Posey Perdue worshiped Satan. She acknowledged that Satan was greater than she, and she was Satan’s servant. In Satan’s and her minds, she belonged to Satan. God thought otherwise, so he had to send his Chief Prince, his angel with the most faith, to tap into the most power of the Holy Spirit. Satan is tenacious

In Satan’s second endeavor to tempt Jesus, he takes Jesus to the top of a high mountain, (Matthew 4:8) and in an instant, touches on the splendor of the Roman Empire. Tiberius Caesar and the kings under him desired wealth and power and did not worship God, so Satan held the reigns of that world. Therefore, it was a partial truth that the kingdoms of the world had been given to Satan, and he could give them to anyone he wanted. Satan knows better than anyone that humans desire to be in control, to hold power. So, of course that is what Satan offered.  All Jesus had to do was worship Satan.

Again, Jesus brushes the devil off with words from Deuteronomy 6:13: “Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.” Jesus would never worship Satan, but God allowed this to happen as a lesson to us. If we are always serving God, we cannot serve Satan – even by mistake.

Heavenly Father, when we see a chance to make more money or be in control, please help us to recognize if Satan is involved. If he is, let us brush him off as Jesus did. Help us to always serve you because “no one can serve two masters”. (Luke 16:13a)

  1. How true the words are of Luke 16:13. In my previous comments I said that I allowed Satan to work in me at a very vulnerable time in my life. I feel that I am still trying to understand what happened and I am still asking for forgiveness. Perhaps it is because I am having a hard time forgiving myself. You can not serve two masters and I was not devoted to my Lord, so Satan took over. Hopefully, there will never be a next time but if there is, I pray that I let God take control and not the Devil.

    1. Please see my post for Day 141. Keep praying for God to take control. Like you, I pray that a lot. I don’t have trouble forgiving myself not to say that sometimes I don’t think, how could I have done that? When I think about the torture that God and Jesus went through so He could forgive us and we could forgive ourselves, it makes it easier to forgive myself. I hope you can picture that and forgive yourself also.
