Bible Study Devotional – Day 118 – Commentary Luke 2:27b-32 – Was Simeon afraid of death?

When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. (Luke 2:27b-32)

When I shopped in Miami my children were little. Hispanic women always cooed over them. One day a lady approached my cart, googling and smiling. When my baby giggled back, she lifted her out of the cart. Although I retrieved her, the lady was so thrilled, I couldn’t be angry.

Simeon was more than excited for he knew the baby he held would save him. Mary didn’t offer him her baby, he took Jesus from her, praising God. He was ecstatic not only to hold His Salvation, but to be dismissed from life on earth and live with God in peace. He served God by telling those at the temple that Baby Jesus would save Jews and Gentiles. Simeon was so joyful and believable no one was upset by his message that they would share their Savior with all nations.

Do you think of death as being dismissed from life on earth and living with God in peace?

  1. The other day I was thinking about this very subject. I am not sure why it came to my mind. It may have come to my mind when I was thinking of my husband’s near death experience this past fall. It was so close that I have had many thoughts about death. If he goes before me, what will my life be like? I have also thought about myself leaving this Earth. I know I am not ready to go right now. I still have so much that I want to do. BUT how will I feel if I live to be 85? Will I be any more ready than I am now. I do not want to be afraid but I feel a fear inside of me when I think of this. Does everyone feel a bit of fear?

    1. I think most people, even Christians, fear the unknown. The enemy is always placing doubts in our minds, but we should always go back to God for comfort and the truth. I’ve been with God for most of the morning while writing my last post, so I can say confidently at this moment that I don’t fear death. Many times I fear how I will die, so I pray that if it isn’t by a heart attack or stroke in my sleep that Jesus will be there to comfort me. I would like to meet my grandchildren before I die, yet I know that those who have gone to heaven and have come back to Earth, still want to leave their families for God. When Dad was in his eighties and Mom in her nineties, I know they were ready to meet Jesus.
