Bible Study Devotional = Day 114 – Commentary Luke 2:13-15 – What impact did the Glory of God, 100,000,000 angels, and hearing their Messiah was born, have on the shepherds?

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” (Luke 2:13-15)

The Christmas movie, The Spruces and The Pines, is about 2 Christmas tree farmers who had loved the same woman. She chose to be a Pine, and the two farmers who were once friends created a family feud. Nephew Spruce and Daughter Pine sought peace so they could be married. Our first Christmas miracle, Jesus, is the catalyst in relationship miracles. His birth miracle, the miracle of God becoming our human Savior, also gave birth to the greatest relationship miracle in history. By the grace of God, Jesus’ birth and death provided a path for humans to become righteous in God’s sight. We who believe that have 24/7 access to God.

Heavenly host are an army of angels under God’s command. Revelations 5:11 tells us there are 10,000 x 10,000 angels. Hebrews 1:6 says, “But when God brought His firstborn Son, Jesus, into the world, He said, ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him.’” Imagine this first Christmas day with shepherds and sheep experiencing the vast light of the Glory of God and being in the presence of 100,000,000 angels. If one angel is frightening, think of the impact of 100,000,000. I can imagine the shepherds stood speechless awhile after experiencing this miracle. They sound almost disoriented describing the greatest miracle to date, God becoming a man, as “this thing that has happened.” After seeing the Glory of God, 100,000,000 angels, and hearing their Messiah was born in a manger, how could they not go to Bethlehem?

  1. The Shepherds were frightened at first but there also had to be a point that they were in awe of the beauty before them. If they remained frightened I don’t think that they would have gone to Bethlehem. The scripture in Luke presents such a beautiful Christmas story. One of my favorite books in the Bible.
