Bible Study Devotional = Day 105 – Commentary Luke 1:46:49 – What is the difference between soul and spirit?

And Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – Holy is His name.” (Luke 1:46-49)

Our bodies are made up of spirit, soul, and flesh. Do you wonder about the difference between soul and spirit?” Our souls are composed of mind, emotions, and will (MEW). Our Spirits enable us to connect with the Holy Spirit through praise and prayer. When you declare belief in Jesus, you receive the Holy Spirit into your inner being. To the extent you allow, the Holy Spirit seeps into your spirit, soul, and flesh. When your spirit is filled by the Holy Spirit, you can allow His Spirit to seep into your soul (mind, emotion, and will) allowing God’s spirit to nudge you. When you act on God’s nudges, you will use your hands and mouths (flesh) to serve, not torment, and you will receive God’s blessings. On our own we are nothing, but with God’s power given by the Holy Spirit, we are blessed and ready to do great things for him.

Mary’s spirit rejoices in God. She allows His Spirit to enter her soul and flesh. Through her mouth, with her emotions, she gives glory to the Lord, declaring He has done great things for her. She is prepared to receive a miracle and God blesses her. She is pregnant with the Holy One, The Babe, The Son of Mary – What Child is This?

  1. I never really put thought to what is the difference between soul and spirit. You feel emotions deep in your soul. Your spirit is filled with the love of God and Jesus Christ. That love fills your soul. Thanks for allowing me to think about all of this!

    1. Isn’t it great that we can connect to the Holy Spirit through our own spirits? That enables the Holy Spirit to fill our minds. “the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:6b).
