Bible Study Devotional – Day 102 – Commentary Luke 1:34-35 – How do miracles happen?

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon (encounter) you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow (dominate) you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:34-35)

I read an article about death and illness which stated one can’t receive a miracle unless something bad happens first. We often think about miracles as healings, near death experiences, and people changing from bad to good. But what about the sun rising, a baby born, starlight, wine from water, Christ risen, Christians risen. Many miracles occur without something bad happening first. But some miracles happen often, so we don’t consider them miracles.

So, Mary asks, “How will this be?” In essence she asks, “How do miracles happen?” And Gabriel explains. The Holy Spirit unites with the receiver, the power of God dominates the receiver, and Jesus becomes human – to complete the miraculous cycle of humans returning to their creator. Without God there is no hope of a miracle occurring, and miracles happen to make believers out of us. The birth of Jesus was the first miracle leading to Gentiles (non-Jews) becoming adopted into God’s family and ascending to heaven to live with Him. Jesus said, “Because I live, you also will live.”

One thing is clear; a miracle requires God. Without God, we have no hope of receiving a miracle, no hope of eternal life, no hope at all.

  1. That is a good question…how do miracles happen? I believe the same as you do, without God there will be no miracle. I also believe that something bad does not have to happen before you receive a miracle. When things go wrong in my life, I force myself to look around me and be grateful for the smallest things. We take the sun rising, a baby’s birth, a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, the mountains, how are our body works, for granite. Yet all of these things are God’s gift to us and they are miracles. They are small and yet huge at the same time. Jesus’ birth is a miracle!

    1. That is a great comment. It is so important to think about miracle and be grateful when things go wrong.
