Bible Study Devotional – Day 40 – Commentary Romans 8:8-11 – Does the Holy Spirit live in us?

Those controlled by their sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by your sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.  But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.  And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.  (Romans 8:8-11).

There are non-Christians who are kinder and more gracious than Christians.  Still, one is spirit-connected to the Holy Spirit, and the other is not.  The difference will come in the ultimate tests of life.  One will collapse and fall, and the other will rise and conquer. As we have discussed, the Holy Spirit unites with the spirits of all Christians. But our bodies are not redeemed, so our flesh is the seat of sin; that is why the body lusts and seeks after pleasure and comfort. Both the body and spirits of non-Christians are dead, but the spirits of Christians are intertwined with the Holy Spirit and are alive because of righteousness.

“Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed by the day.” (2 Corinthians4:16).  Sin has its seat in the physical body, and it rises up like a powerful beast. But – “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)  So the spirit of God within us is stronger than the sin in our bodies.  Therefore, we have the strength to control the body. We cannot reverse the process of death.  Our bodies are going to die, but we can refuse to let the members of our bodies become instruments of sin.  We can refuse by the power of the Spirit.

  1. His spirit does live within us. That thought makes me rejoice. I love the way you explained the difference between our bodies and our souls. It is so true that when we are tested and go through difficult times Christians draw from the strength within us. It enables us to move forward and trust the Lord to get us through.

    1. I love John 14:16-17 “He (God) will give you another helper who will be with you forever. That helper is the Spirit of Truth.” The Amplified Version John 14:26 teaches us that the Holy Spirit is also the Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby and teaches us all things. The Holy Spirit is with us every moment of every day.It is comforting and crazy to know that God’s Spirit lives in us.
