SOAP Daily Devotional Acts 27:9-13 – Who controls your life? – Free online Bible study – Commentary in easy English – Day 691

Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest. When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. (Acts 27:9-13)

My daughter’s friend divorced. In the process, her friend’s husband took all the money from their joint accounts and hired a powerful lawyer to gain full custody of their daughter. Both mother and daughter were helpless and devastated.

Like my daughter’s friend, Paul presented his case to the centurion but had no authority in the decision to sail or not. When people make decisions affecting us negatively, we can pray, remain in faith, and have hope as Paul did, or we can remain miserable.

I’m happy to report that my daughter’s friend has full custody of her child and that her husband is sitting in jail, realizing the consequences of his actions. I pray he finds his savior so that he may find peace.

Father, I praise You for answering my prayers when a situation seems hopeless. Remind me to give my problems to you. Thank you for keeping my family safe today and binding us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

  1. We control our lives and who we are. It is so easy to let someone control and manipulate you when experiencing difficult times. It is also easy to forget that God will help you through any situation in your life that hurts you. I have a friend and her granddaughter controls and manipulates her. It is so sad because she loves her granddaughter so much, and the granddaughter is a bright light that gets her through the tough life that she has had. However, the granddaughter ignores her except when she wants something. The granddaughter is a user. It has brought my friend a lot of pain. I know my friend prays but I don’t know if she has shared this problem with God. I have prayed for her and I hope she has taken her problem to God.

    1. It is difficult to see our friends and family manipulated by loved ones. Often we don’t realize we’re being manipulated-at least not right away. I look forward to when we all will live in heaven and no tears will be shed.
