Acts 12:12-15 – Why should we expect the unexpected? Are you praying big prayers?

When this (that the Lord had rescued him) had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.” (Acts 12:12-14)

Did you wonder why those praying at Mary’s house 24/7 were sure the knock on the door couldn’t be Peter? These were devout Christians with strong faith. We assume they were praying for Peter’s release from jail but perhaps they were praying that Herod didn’t behead Peter because they thought it was impossible for Peter to be released. God says that nothing is impossible for him, but do we believe it?

This made me reflect on my own prayers. Most every day I pray for God to fill me with the Holy Spirit, protect my loved ones, and to have me write His words. Then I say individual prayers for each person in my family. But am I praying big enough? Should I pray for God to give me words He wants everyone to hear and to make my book a New York Times best seller? I’m not looking to be rich but it could be a source of money to provide scholarships to Christian schools for at-risk children.

From now on I’m going to enlarge my prayers and pray for crazy impossible things. I want to expect the unexpected. How about you?

Father, I praise you for challenging me to pray big. Through you all things are possible. Help me imagine all that I could do with the talents you’ve given me, discover the dreams of my family, see their talents, and pray crazy big prayers. In Christ’s name, I pray, amen.
