Daily Devotional Acts 8:4-8 – What is your response to God’s calling? – Free Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 513

Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was great joy in that city. (Acts 8:4-8)

Jesus told his apostles in Acts 1:8: “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” But they were comfortable in Jerusalem so didn’t spread the Gospel in other parts of Judea or Samaria. Since they didn’t follow God’s instructions, God allowed the tragedy of persecution by the enemy to scatter the disciples and spread Christianity.

We can avoid the enemy by listening to God the first time he speaks to or nudges us. If we don’t answer his calling, He may drive us into it. Most times that isn’t pleasant and could involve the enemy finding dark corners in our souls. But when we wander off God’s path, God will heal us. The enemy will shriek when he’s thrust into light, and we’ll experience God’s joy.

Father God, I praise You for using me in Your kingdom. Circumcise my ears so I can hear your voice and do Your work. Thank you for keeping the enemy out of my life and the lives of my family. You have blessed me, and I feel great joy. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

  1. Sometimes we may not understand God’s calling. Will He make sure I hear him and understand Him? I hope so. Right now I feel a bit abandoned because my prayers have not been answered for my health. I know He can hear me, But can I hear him?

    1. I think He wants you to have faith that He’s with you even though He hasn’t answered your prayers. Perhaps he wants you to pray differently. I felt called to send you Dodie Osteen’s book, so I obeyed that calling. Maybe there’s something in that book he wants you to do. You will hear or feel a nudging when God wants you to do something. Quite often when you’re studying the Bible something will jump out at you. Make sure whenever you feel a nudging you act on it because that’s one way God knows you are faithful.

    1. Hi, I prayed for you this morning. I love you, Sis. Thanks so much for your prayers! Blessings and Love, Jody
