Daily Devotional Luke 22:60b-62 – Why did the rooster crow after Peter denied Jesus? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 396

Just as he (Peter) was speaking (to deny Jesus the third time), the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. (Luke 22:60b-62)

On my first vacation to Costa Rica to visit my daughter and attend a language school, I discovered many breed chickens, not just in the countryside but in the city, too. Every morning when the sun rose at 5 a.m., crowing roosters awakened me. I was annoyed. A couple weeks ago, an inquiry sent me to a call center, actually someone sitting on their back porch in the Phillipines. I could barely hear the woman speak over the rooster crows. Again, I was annoyed. Alright, perhaps more humored than annoyed. But roosters are my least favorite bird besides the parakeet I grew up with that loved my sister and bit me.

There had to be a reason Jesus chose a rooster to crow after Peter denied him three times. Obviously, it had nothing to do with mating. It could be the rooster stood for the dawning of a new day or new light. But it was still gloomy for Peter. Jesus convicted him with a look as the rooster crowed, and Peter wept bitterly. Jesus had been on trial. It was the conclusion of a long night both for Jesus and Peter. To my knowledge, that was the last time Peter succumbed to the enemy. It was the end of darkness. That’s what the rooster symbolizes.

Dearest Heavenly Father, I praise you and thank you for convicting me of my wrongdoings and healing me as you did Peter. Next time a rooster crows, I’ll smile thinking about the end of darkness. Thank you for the wisdom in Your word. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

  1. The parakeet, Jose, was neurotic…LOL. For the life of me I can’t figure out why he chose me. I think I told you about the rooster at the Schmucker’s. It was evil. Back to the Bible…I always felt that the rooster crowing was ominous. Something very unpleasant was about to happen to Jesus and I never associated the crowing with anything positive. Peter was devastated by what happened with Jesus. It might have been the end of darkness for Peter, but it wasn’t the end of darkness.

    1. Very true. We can all make the choice as Peter did to end darkness after Jesus took our sins away. True we won’t be perfect, but when we follow Jesus, we don’t have to be.
