Devotional Luke 11:49-51 – Who killed Jesus? – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English –Day 268

“Because of this (Israelites persecuting and killing the prophets), God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute. Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.’” (Luke 11:49-51)

Throughout the history of the Israelites, God sent prophets to teach them love and mercy. Instead of repenting, they felt threatened and killed them. The last prophet God sent (before John the Baptist) was Zechariah, and they had the audacity to kill him in the temple. Human wisdom doesn’t understand why God would send more prophets for the Israelites to persecute and murder. But the Israelites are God’s children whom he deeply loves and will keep pursuing until the end of the world. So, in His wisdom, He sends John the Baptist, Jesus, and the apostles, not just for the Israelites but for all of us.

God’s wisdom chose apostles He knew would be willing to die for Him. The apostles realized it was their flesh dying. They longed to live in their heavenly bodies and to return to their Creator and Savior. Being persecuted and murdered was an honor. Apostle John, though persecuted, was the only one who lived to old age. Understanding death and the willingness to die for God is an area where apostleship exceeds discipleship.

God’s wisdom chose us to be adopted into His family. He loves us so much that He sent His Son knowing He would die for us. Jesus speaks to the Pharisees/experts in the law who condone murdering prophets who threaten them. They are the Jews who will kill Him. Therefore, they are the ones who will be held responsible for it all.

Dearest Heavenly Father, you know my full potential and the plans You have for me. I am scared to pray this, but if it is Your will to take me beyond discipleship, help me be brave and hold me in Your arms. Help me see hypocrisy, remembering I am to hate sin but love sinners. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

  1. The Pharisees rejected Jesus and His teachings. Were they solely responsible for his death? I thought the Romans were also in the equation.

    1. It was the Pharisees who had Jesus arrested. Yes, the Romans were also responsible. The sins of mankind are mostly responsible for Jesus’ death.
