Devotional Luke 11:47-48 —Woes of the Pharisees – Woe #5 – Building Tombs for the Prophets – Online Bible Study – Commentary in easy English – Day 267

“Woe to you because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. (Luke 11:47-48)

Throughout history, awful things have occurred in the name of religion that are covered up. In recent history priests in the Catholic Church molested children. Very few of these priests came to justice.

Jesus says in Matthew 23:27: “Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like white-washed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” This verse tells us that tombs (like closets) often serve two purposes: 1) They honor on the outside and 2) They hide filth on the inside. The Pharisees and teachers of the Law honored the Prophets but didn’t condemn those who murdered and persecuted the Prophets when they felt threatened by them. Therefore, throughout history, nothing changed. Jews kept persecuting prophets. Pretty soon they will kill Jesus.

Jesus asks us to look at the churches and organizations we represent. Would homosexuals, people with tattoos and multiple piercings, and people of different races feel comfortable attending? Are women and men given the same responsibilities? We represent any organization we belong to. If we represent injustice, we are responsible for it. And nothing will change over generations.

Father God, You’re the King of justice, love, and mercy, and I am Your representative. Please show me when I represent something You’re not. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

  1. Yesterday in my comments I mentioned horrible things that we were done in the name of God and Jesus Christ, religion. Thousands of years later there is still unrest in the Holy land. Somethings never change, perhaps the reasons for the unrest change. God wants us to be free of judgement. I feel that God wants us to be accepting of change and differences. Church should be accepting of all people, we don’t need to look the same to be in a church and worship God.

    1. The best way we can change things is not to be a member of a church that is not accepting of change and differences. When I return to church in Ocala, I can no longer be a member of a church denomination that discriminates against women by not allowing them to be elders and ministers. I love the church and the words of the pastor but not the rules that are made up by people.
