Daily Devotional Luke 11:46 – Woes to the Pharisees – Woe #4 – Loading people with burdens – Online Bible Study – Commentaries in easy English – Day 266

Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. (Luke 11:46).

My oldest daughter attended a Baptist school in the fourth grade, so we decided to attend the church. Instead of an uplifting sermon, the minister was asking for pledge cards to not watch television. Later I found out my daughter’s teacher punished the children by telling them if they continued their bad behavior, they would go to hell. I wonder how many people this church turned away from God.

That church preached legalism, laws. Like the Pharisees, they thought it was their duty to tell people what they were doing wrong. Jesus came to give us joy and peace. He took away all the burdens of the Old Testament law, replacing them with only one command – Love God and others. Because when we’re loving, pleasing God, we’re not breaking laws. Love is helping others ease their burdens, not adding to them.

Lord, forgive me for placing unnecessary burdens on my family and coworkers. Help me show and teach in a loving way. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. We talked about judging and the church being judgemental and turning people away from God, instead of showing the love of God and embracing anyone who walked into the church. It is amazing to me what happens in the name of God and Jesus Christ. It is why so many walk away from the church. I know that I have judged, I know that I have placed unnecessary burdens on friends and family. I ask for forgiveness and mercy. I will try and do better and show the love of God.

    1. So many people walk away from God and churches because they don’t know who God is. He is sometimes represented by people who make life a burden for others instead of showing God’s love. We are all guilty at times. This is what motivates me to write the blog. I want people to know who God is, and I pray I represent Him as He is. It is so easy to place unnecessary burdens on people and to judge. God doesn’t want that.
